Description
Capital Caryatid Brass 74x48mm is a beautiful, stately head of a Greek woman. The head also includes 2 feet. This capital has a shiny brass finish.
In the fifth century BC, Karyai sided with the Persians in the wars between the Greeks and the Persians. After the victory of the Greeks, they took revenge on the inhabitants. According to the Roman writer Vitruvius, all the men were killed and the women of Karyai were taken as slaves. The sculpted female figures that we know today as caryatids are reminders of that history. Like pillars, the women carry an eternal burden, as it were. (source: Historiek.net)
This high-quality capital was made in Italy.
