*What is Bakelite?
A Bakelite door handle is a door handle made of Bakelite, one of the first fully synthetic plastics invented in the early 20th century by the Belgian Leo Baekeland. Bakelite is a thermoset: it does not soften when heated, but remains hard. These strong, durable properties make the material very suitable for door handles, which also give them a characteristic, classic appearance.
Characteristics of Bakelite:
- Origin: It is the first fully synthetic plastic, invented around 1907.
- Material: It is a phenolic resin, a mixture of phenol and formaldehyde.
- Features:
- Thermoset: It does not soften with heat, but remains hard, which ensures durability.
- Strong and sturdy: Bakelite is mechanically strong and feels solid.
- Insulating: It also has good electrical insulating properties.
- Castable: The material can be easily pressed into various shapes under high pressure.
